I believe that every dog has a unique personality!

Many people who consider themselves not to be dog people most likely just haven’t come in contact with a dog that meshes with their individual personality. From A Man’s Best Friend, by Rachel – San Luis Obispo, California

Have you ever tried to get clear, I mean really clear, on what you believe? It’s tough. Not easy at all. It’s one of the things that I like about writing. And it’s one of the reasons that I love the podcast and website, This I Believe?

I came to work at PawsLikeMe because I believe in dogs, and I believe in the human-dog bond. I also believe that each dog personality, just like each human personality, is unique.

Those who know me know that I’m a hound dog freak – the lower the rider, the better. I’ll take a basset hound over a shepherd any day. But this thing is, not all hounds, or even basset hounds, are the same.

Yes, most of them have the drool, and the smell, and the long ears. Just like I am 5’ 6”, white, male, with brown hair, and on some days I suspect I have a bit of an odor too.

But some hounds are people-hounds – they LOVE people and could care less about other dogs. They just want to cuddle. They’re on the lower energy scale and are a little less independent.

Each dog personality, just like each human personality, is unique.

Other hounds are all about the hunt. They see a rabbit, and it’s all over – they’re not coming back. Sure, they listen to commands, but they’re at their happiest when they’re working a scent. These dogs have some energy, listen to commands, and want some exercise.

My point is – I love dogs. Especially hounds. But not every hound is right for me. I like the lower energy, Franklin sleeping with his football by his face. Dog personality varies from dog to dog - some dogs like football, others hockey!cuddle-monster type that wants to binge watch Netflix with me. If the only lowrider I’d ever met were a higher energy hunter, I’d be missing out on a whole lot of loving.

I’m with you, Rachel. If you think dogs aren’t for you, it must just be that you haven’t met the right match. And, if you’re already a dog lover, take the time to make sure your next dog adoption is a good match.
